Utech, Ja Centre for the Arts

The University of Technology, Jamaica Centre for the Arts, established in 1998, is one of the buildings used on the Hope Farm School and was declared a National Monument in 2019 because of its association with the history of the Farm School (Jamaica National Heritage Trust, 2019). During its use at the Farm School, the building was the Administrative Block.  At CAST, the wooden structure shared its space as a classroom and a kitchen and dining area. The classroom was designated for students studying Institutional Management, and the kitchen and dining areas were for the use of resident students and administrative staff. The additional functions of the building entailed security and housekeeping (Sangster, 2011, p. 14, p.281-282.

The Centre for the Arts which holds the central location of the university exemplifies cultural heritage preservation through its offered training to students in performing, visual, and dramatic arts, as well as music and song. Apart from the Centre facilitating students to uncover their creative capabilities and build their confidence, it is responsible for the quaint, unparallel open-air museum known as the Caribbean Sculpture Park ("Centre for the Arts", n.d.). The building also houses the office of the University's Museum and Heritage Preservation Officer, Mrs Joan Francis.
