The Ruins of Three Concrete Silos
The Ruins of Three Concrete Silos were built between 1920 and 1930. The silos stand in the northwestern section of the university campus, next to the Students' Activity Centre and in front of the Cynthia Shako Early Childhood & Daycare Centre (Jamaican National Heritage Trust, n.d.). The Silos, built during the operation of the 1910 Farm School, were used to store silage to improve cattle rearing on the land. Today, the silos are inoperative as the roof and ladders leading to the top of the structure are absent (Sangster, 2011, p. 9). The Jamaica National Heritage Trust declared the silos National Monument in 2010 due to their prominent identity in Jamaican history and serving as the last artefact to signify the existence of the Hope Farm (Jamaican National Heritage Trust, n.d.).
